Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton is opening up about a harrowing medical emergency that nearly cost him his life. In a candid video message to his fans, the 48-year-old detailed a grueling three-week hospital stint, admitting that his own “stupidity” led to the ordeal.
Hoping his followers can learn from his terrifying experience, Perez broke down exactly what went wrong and why taking your medication properly is an absolute must.

A Simple Mistake Leads to Sepsis
The health scare began when Perez came down with a bad case of the flu. To manage his symptoms, he took over-the-counter medications for about a week. However, he admitted to making a massive, avoidable mistake: he never took the pills with food.
Taking harsh medications on an empty stomach completely wrecked his digestive tract. After just a week, he developed a severe ulcer, an intestinal perforation, and sepsis—a life-threatening medical emergency caused by the body’s extreme response to an infection.
The Grueling Surgery and Hospitalization
Perez was rushed to the hospital experiencing excruciating stomach pains. For the first five days, doctors ran constant tests trying to locate the exact site of the perforation while his body rapidly began to shut down.
Surgeons ultimately performed laparoscopic surgery. Using tiny cameras, they searched his internal organs, located the perforation, and washed out the massive amount of infection pooling inside his body. The physical toll was immense. Doctors had to drain his lungs and place him on heart medication because his heart rate “got out of control.” Amidst the chaos, he even developed a secondary infection while recovering in the hospital.
The Road to Recovery
After two weeks of sheer misery, Perez was finally able to eat solid food. He spent a third week recovering in the hospital before doctors cleared him to go home. However, his treatment is still ongoing. He will spend his first 10 days at home receiving intravenous medication through a PICC line in his arm, which is more effective than oral antibiotics.
Despite the grueling physical recovery, Perez shared that the best medicine was reuniting with his three children: Mario, 13, Mia, 10, and Mayte, 8. They shared a massive, tearful group hug, as his kids had been absolutely terrified for their father’s life.
A Cautionary Tale for Fans
The TMI: My Life in Scandal author says this terrifying brush with death has completely shifted his priorities. Moving forward, he is focusing on getting enough sleep, protecting his health, and prioritizing his family above all else.
He ended his video with a stark, simple warning for his viewers: “Take medication with food. Don’t have it on an empty stomach. Don’t end up like me in the hospital for 21 days.”
