Tim Curry Never Married and Had a Curt Response When Asked Why

Tim Curry wasn’t interested in speaking publicly about his personal life.

The It star, who died “peacefully” at his Los Angeles home on Tuesday, Aug. 25, never married or welcomed any children, and made the intentional decision to shield his personal life from the spotlight. In the introduction of his 2025 memoir, Vagabond, Curry shared a curt response for those who expected to discover any “lurid details of my love affairs” while reading his book.

“I guarantee you, if it matters, that I have experienced true love, true heartbreak and everything in between, including no small amount of wreckage. Which, naturally, helps inform who I am. I have loved and been loved and I hope you have, too. But I’m not interested in your romances,” he wrote.

The actor added, “And specifics about my affairs of the heart or the bedroom are — respectfully– none of your f–king business.”

Later in his memoir, Curry shared more about why he didn’t want to openly share his personal life. He explained that he didn’t like the “part of show business that deems your personal life public property,” admitting he “repelled” the idea of self-promotion from the earliest days of his career.

“I mean, it’s all very well when you’re happy, but it can be extremely nasty when you’re not. And I frankly don’t think it’s anybody’s business. I disagree with anybody who believes that you are depriving people from enjoying a production if you don’t bare your soul to the public while you’re taking on a role,” he shared.

While Curry shared he understood why interviews were necessary and a part of the job, he wrote that he still found the idea to be “intrusive.”

“The biggest drawback is if people become really rabid fans, then learn about you and suddenly think they’ve bonded with you or — in the worst extremes — that they sort of own you,” he explained. “Then you have to disabuse them of the fact, by saying something like, ‘I’m just a person, and I’m not your person.’ Which is rude, I suppose, but has proven necessary on occasion.”

Curry echoed his sentiments about keeping his personal life private during an October 2025 interview with The New Yorker. Asked why he was more comfortable opening up about other aspects of his personal life over his romantic life, the actor shared he didn’t think it was “anybody’s business.”

“Well, I think that my romantic life is none of anybody’s business, and I say so rather thoroughly in the book,” he told the outlet. “There’s a lot of profanity in the book, which I somewhat regret, because I have too much respect for the language to give it over completely to Anglo-Saxon.”

Last October, during an appearance on CBS Sunday Mornings to promote his memoir, The Rocky Horror Picture Show star shared why he thought it was “important” to be an enigma.

“I think it’s important. I encourage it,” he told host Ben Mankiewicz. “One of the keys is to not encourage an identity, I think. And I’ve tried to nurse that. I have protected that and continued to.”

Elsewhere in that interview, Curry candidly detailed his thoughts about being in the public eye.

The Annie actor said he was initially drawn to acting because of “the freedom of being somebody else,” but that fame was also a factor. “I think that I was, like everybody else, drawn to the idea of fame, probably, although I came to kind of rather despise it,” he said.

“I think that I was rather a purist about my work and about acting. There were people — they know who they are — who actually just were a kind of star personality and didn’t ever really disappear. I wanted to disappear into characters,” Curry explained. “I didn’t want an audience to say, ‘Oh, thank God, here he is.’ ”

“I didn’t like it much,” he said of fame. “I never really know what they expect [from me]. You can’t tell.”
