Grammy-nominated rapper Mystikal, legally known as Michael Tyler, has officially pleaded guilty to third-degree rape. The plea stems from a harrowing 2022 arrest and marks the latest chapter in the 55-year-old musician’s long history of legal and criminal troubles.

By accepting this plea deal in a Louisiana state court, Tyler avoids a highly publicized trial and a potential mandatory life sentence. Here is a complete breakdown of the case, the plea agreement, and Tyler’s troubling criminal history.

The 2022 Arrest and the Plea Deal

Authorities arrested Tyler in the summer of 2022 following a severe domestic incident outside Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Initially, prosecutors charged him with several severe felonies, including first-degree rape, simple robbery, domestic abuse battery, and false imprisonment. Tyler originally pleaded not guilty to all charges.

According to investigators, the victim provided a deeply disturbing account of the incident. She reported that Tyler raped, beat, and choked her. Furthermore, she stated that he confiscated her car keys and phone to prevent her from escaping. During the ordeal, he also forced her to transfer money to his account using Cash App.

With his trial set to begin on March 30, Tyler opted to accept a plea deal on Tuesday. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of third-degree rape. If convicted of the original first-degree rape charge, he would have faced a mandatory life sentence. Now, he faces up to 20 years in prison.

A Pattern of Abuse: Mystikal’s Criminal History

This recent guilty plea is not Tyler’s first conviction for sexual violence. The rapper has a well-documented history of domestic abuse and sexual assault spanning two decades.

  • 2004 Extortion and Assault: Tyler served six years in prison after a jury found him guilty of sexual assault and extortion involving his former hairstylist. Consequently, the state required him to permanently register as a sex offender.
  • 2012 Domestic Abuse: A few years after his release, authorities jailed Tyler for three months following a misdemeanor domestic abuse charge.
  • 2017 Kidnapping and Rape Charges: Police arrested Tyler again in 2017 on charges of rape and kidnapping. He spent 18 months in jail awaiting trial before authorities ultimately dropped the case due to a lack of evidence.

From Chart-Topping Hits to Prison

Before his criminal behavior derailed his career, Mystikal was a prominent figure in the late-1990s and early-2000s hip-hop scene. He achieved global success with his 2000 hit single, “Shake Ya Ass,” which earned him two Grammy nominations. The track even made a memorable pop-culture crossover, featuring in the Hugh Grant film About a Boy. Furthermore, his album debuted at the number one spot on the Billboard 200 chart.

However, his musical legacy is now permanently overshadowed by his repeated offenses. Tyler will remain in custody as he awaits his official sentencing hearing, which the court has tentatively scheduled for June.
