The truth is out there, and according to former President Barack Obama, it’s real.

In a candid new interview released this weekend, the 44th President of the United States didn’t mince words when pressed about extraterrestrial life. During a “lightning round” of questions with political commentator Brian Tyler Cohen, Obama offered a surprisingly direct answer to the age-old question: Are we alone?

“They’re Real, But…”

When asked simply if aliens are real, Obama responded:

“They’re real, but I haven’t seen them.”

While the admission is sure to fuel conspiracy theorists worldwide, Obama was quick to shut down one specific rumor regarding where these beings might be hiding.

The Area 51 Myth Debunked

For decades, pop culture has insisted that Area 51—the highly classified USAF facility in Nevada—is housing alien specimens and crashed spacecraft. Obama, however, poured cold water on that theory.

“And they’re not being kept in… what is it? Area 51,” Obama clarified. “There’s no underground facility, unless there’s this enormous conspiracy and they hid it from the president of the United States.”

The First Question He Asked as President

This isn’t the first time Obama has touched on the subject. He admitted that his curiosity about aliens was immediate upon taking office. When asked what the first question he wanted answered as President was, he laughed: “Where are the aliens?”

He previously shared a similar story on The Late Late Show with James Corden, recalling that he famously asked officials if there was a secret lab keeping alien specimens. The answer, at least officially, was no.

What Would Happen If We Made Contact?

Obama has previously speculated on how proof of alien life would change humanity. In a 2021 interview, he noted that while his own politics wouldn’t change (viewing humans as “tiny organisms on a little speck”), society might not handle it as well. “New religions would pop up,” he predicted. “And who knows what kind of arguments we get into.”
