The official story was that he wanted more time with his family. But new reports suggest the exit of Anderson Cooper from 60 Minutes was far from voluntary.

According to insiders, the veteran journalist didn’t quit the prestigious CBS newsmagazine—he was “pushed out” following a clash in vision with the network’s new leadership.

“Hostile Territory”

While Cooper released a statement citing his desire to spend time with his young children, sources tell the National Enquirer that the environment at CBS News had shifted drastically under the new Editor-in-Chief, Bari Weiss.

One source described the atmosphere as “hostile territory,” claiming that Cooper’s polished, thoughtful style no longer fit the network’s new direction.

“Every script was scrutinized. Every edit questioned,” a source revealed to Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice Substack. “It stopped feeling like trust and started feeling like a test… When management makes it that uncomfortable, walking away is the only option left.”

A Clash of Styles?

The report alleges that Weiss, who recently held a town hall declaring her intent to make CBS “fit for purpose in the 21st century,” is seeking a harder edge for the network.

Insiders claim that Cooper’s journalistic approach became a liability in this new era. “They’re looking for edge. For dominance,” another insider noted. “Anderson is thoughtful and precise. That suddenly became a liability.”

The Official Statement

The rumors stand in stark contrast to Cooper’s official farewell. On Monday, February 16, the CNN anchor confirmed he was stepping down from his correspondent role at CBS after nearly 20 years in a statement to Entertainment Weekly.

“Being a correspondent at 60 Minutes has been one of the great honors of my career,” Cooper stated. “For nearly 20 years, I’ve been able to balance my jobs at CNN and CBS, but I have little kids now, and I want to spend as much time with them as possible.”

While Cooper returns to his full-time duties at CNN, questions linger about the changing culture at CBS and who might be next on the chopping block.
