U.S. Senator Marco Rubio has urged Panama to reduce China’s influence over the Panama Canal. He warned that Beijing’s growing role could threaten regional security. The canal is a vital artery for global trade. Rubio emphasized its importance in a recent statement.
“The Panama Canal is not just a national asset,” Rubio said. “It is a cornerstone of global commerce.” He added that China’s involvement risks compromising the canal’s neutrality. His remarks reflect broader U.S. concerns about China’s expanding footprint in Latin America.
Why Is China’s Role Growing?

Since 2017, China has deepened its ties with Panama. The two nations established diplomatic relations that year. Chinese investments now exceed $1 billion annually. Beijing has funded key infrastructure projects, including ports and railways. Additionally, Chinese firms have modernized the canal’s facilities.
China’s engagement is part of its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). This global strategy aims to expand Beijing’s economic influence. However, experts warn of potential risks. A study by the Wilson Center highlights these concerns. It notes that BRI projects often lack transparency. They can also lead to debt dependency.
Challenges for Panama
Panama faces a delicate balancing act. The canal generates about $2.5 billion annually. This revenue is crucial for the country’s economy. At the same time, Chinese investments have fueled development. These funds have supported modernization efforts across Panama.
However, there are downsides. Critics argue that reliance on China could harm Panama’s sovereignty. Dr. Maria Gonzalez, an expert at the Atlantic Council, explained this risk. “Chinese investments bring short-term benefits,” she said. “But they may lead to long-term dependency.”
Calls for Transparency

Rubio has called for stricter oversight of Chinese projects in Panama. He urged Panamanian authorities to ensure transparency. Additionally, he encouraged the U.S. to strengthen ties with Panama. Washington could provide alternative funding options. For example, the Biden administration launched the “Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity.” This initiative aims to counter China’s influence in the region.
The U.S. has a vested interest in the canal’s security. Rubio stressed this point. “We must assist our partners,” he said. “The canal must remain free from manipulation.”
