Colbert shared the massive news on social media alongside legendary director Peter Jackson. Fans already know Jackson is currently developing The Hunt for Gollum with Andy Serkis. However, Jackson briefly stepped aside to let the late-night host drop his own blockbuster announcement.
As a massive J.R.R. Tolkien superfan, Colbert focused his writing on specific “lost” chapters. Specifically, he zeroed in on the early sections of The Fellowship of the Ring. Jackson famously skipped these particular moments in his 2001 movie adaptation.
Therefore, the new film will cover chapters ranging from “Three Is Company” through “Fog on the Barrow-downs.” Colbert actually spent years secretly developing the story with his son, screenwriter Peter McGee. Eventually, they gathered the courage to pitch the ambitious concept directly to Jackson.
