After a steady and spectacular two-decade climb in Hollywood, the moment finally arrived. At the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday night, Michael B. Jordan took home the Oscar for Best Actor, cementing his status as one of the defining talents of his generation.

Winning for his dual role in Ryan Coogler’s acclaimed vampire-gangster epic Sinners, Jordan’s victory was the crowning moment of a historic night at the Dolby Theatre.

Here is a look at how Jordan captured the gold and why this win is a milestone for both the actor and the Academy.

The Role That Won the Gold: Two Jordans Are Better Than One

The Academy essentially got two powerhouse performances for the price of one. In Sinners, set in the 1930s Jim Crow South, Jordan plays twin brothers, Smoke and Stack. The siblings return to their Mississippi hometown to open a juke joint, only to find themselves fighting to survive a bloody night against an Irish vampire (played by Jack O’Connell) and his undead band.

Jordan crafted two wholly distinct personas:

  • Smoke: The stoic, serious twin carrying heavy emotional baggage.
  • Stack: The sly, chatty, and cunning brother with a quick grin but equally deep trauma.

This spectacular double-duty performance allowed Jordan to pull ahead of early award-season favorites, including Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme), to secure his first-ever Oscar nomination and win.

An Emotional and Historic Speech

Taking the stage to a massive standing ovation, the 39-year-old star reflected on his 25 years in the industry and the trailblazers who paved his way.

“I stand here because of the people that came before me: Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, Will Smith,” Jordan said. “To be amongst those giants, amongst those greats, amongst my ancestors, amongst my guys. Thank you, everybody in this room, and everybody at home, for supporting me over my career.”

Backstage, Jordan added that he hopes to inspire the next generation to “dream big,” noting his belief in “pouring into the universe and the universe will pour back into you.”

A Record-Breaking Night for “Sinners”

Jordan’s win was part of a massive sweep for Sinners. Directed and written by his longtime collaborator Ryan Coogler—the duo previously teamed up for Fruitvale Station, Creed, and Black Panther—the film entered the night with a record-shattering 16 Oscar nominations.

Ultimately, Sinners walked away with four Academy Awards:

  • Best Actor (Michael B. Jordan)
  • Best Original Screenplay (Ryan Coogler)
  • Best Cinematography
  • Best Original Score

What’s Next for the Star?

With an Oscar finally on his mantle, Jordan shows no signs of slowing down. He is actively expanding his footprint as a filmmaker following his successful directorial debut with Creed III, and he is currently helming the highly anticipated remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, set to arrive next year.
