President Donald Trump took to social media on Sunday to mock Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer following a verbal slip-up.
While arguing on the Senate floor about the ongoing government shutdown, Schumer accidentally stated, “We must fund ICE,” before quickly correcting himself to say, “We must fund TSA now.”
Trump immediately highlighted the gaffe on Truth Social. He wrote: “Schumer got ‘discombobulated’ in the Senate yesterday, and said, ‘WE MUST FUND ICE,’ prior to correcting himself. Thank you Chuck, I agree!”

The Ongoing DHS Shutdown Battle
The verbal slip occurred during a heated debate over the ongoing Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown, which began on February 13.
Senate Democrats are currently filibustering the SAVE America Act (an election integrity bill). Meanwhile, Schumer and his colleagues argue that Republicans are responsible for the shutdown that is causing massive TSA delays at airports across the country.
The irony of Schumer’s slip-up? Trump has repeatedly reminded the public that the current DHS shutdown does not actually impact Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations. ICE received full funding last summer through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
Gridlock in the Senate
Schumer’s attempted call to “fund TSA now” relates to a failed Democratic effort to pass a funding package strictly for the TSA.
Republicans blocked that isolated effort. They argue that the rest of the DHS funding currently on hold is vital to American national security, especially amid ongoing international conflicts.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune noted that the best way to solve the crisis is to fund the entire department, rather than picking and choosing certain aspects. Republicans previously proposed funding the entire DHS, but the Senate failed to reach the 60-vote supermajority needed to advance the measure.
Major Disruptions for Travelers
The political gridlock is causing real-world headaches for American travelers. Absences by TSA airport officers have already disrupted travel at major airports over the last week.
This raises massive alarms for airlines as the busy spring break travel season hits its peak. Airlines expect a record-breaking travel period this season, with an estimated 171 million passengers taking to the skies.
