Taylor Swift broke her silence Tuesday, voicing support for Harris over Donald Trump, and calling the Democratic candidate a “steady-handed, gifted leader.”
Taylor Swift’s Instagram post went live just after the heated presidential debate where the two candidates squared off for the first time. She watched intently and decided it was time to share her thoughts.
“I’m supporting @kamalaharris because she stands up for the rights and issues that I believe need a dedicated advocate,” Swift declared. “I truly think we can achieve so much more if we’re guided by calm rather than chaos.”
In a cheeky nod to the criticism from Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance, who had dismissed Democratic women in a less-than-flattering way, Swift humorously labeled herself a “childless cat lady.”
On Wednesday, Donald Trump took to Fox News to criticize Swift’s endorsement. “I was never a fan of Taylor Swift… she’s very liberal. She always backs Democrats, and she might face consequences for it,” he said.
Before this, Swift had kept a low profile regarding the 2024 election, even as her fans rallied under “Swifties for Kamala.” But after seeing AI-generated images of her falsely endorsing Trump, which stoked her fears about misinformation, she felt compelled to speak out.
“It made me realize how important it is to be open about my own voting choices,” Swift explained. “The best way to fight misinformation is with the truth.”
She urged her fans to “do your own research,” though she didn’t directly tell them to vote for Harris. Instead, she said, “I’ve done my research and made my choice. Your research and your choice are up to you.”
Swift also shared a voter registration link on her Instagram stories and expressed particular admiration for Harris’s running mate, Walz. She praised the Minnesota governor for his long-standing support for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and women’s bodily autonomy.

The Harris campaign has eagerly embraced support from the pop world, which leans left. Stars like Beyoncé and Charli XCX have shown their support, with Beyoncé’s song “Freedom” used in campaign ads and Charli XCX’s album “brat” becoming central to the Harris campaign’s social media strategy.
Swift’s endorsement is a significant boost for Harris. Known for her massive global fanbase, Swift’s political stance has always drawn attention. Although she avoided political endorsements in the past, fearing backlash, she broke her silence in 2018 to back a Democrat. Since then, she has supported Joe Biden, voiced pro-LGBTQ+ messages, and condemned the Supreme Court’s abortion ruling.
