Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story has brought renewed attention to a case that shocked the nation more than three decades ago — the murder of José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez by their sons, Lyle and Erik. As interest in the story resurfaces, many are once again asking: Who were José and Kitty Menendez?

Early Life and Family Background

José Menendez was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1944. He moved to the United States at age 16 in search of opportunity. Driven and ambitious, he built a career in business and rose to executive roles at major corporations like Hertz and RCA Records.

Kitty Menendez, originally Mary Louise Andersen, came from Illinois. She met José while attending college and later married him in 1963. After working as a teacher early in their marriage, she chose to stay at home to care for their two sons, Lyle and Erik.

The Tragedy in Beverly Hills

On August 20, 1989, Lyle and Erik murdered their parents in their Beverly Hills mansion. At the time, Lyle was 21 and Erik was 18. The brutality of the crime shocked the public, but the true motive remained unclear for years.

Initially, the brothers claimed they acted out of fear after enduring years of abuse. They accused their father of sexual misconduct and described their mother as emotionally unstable and addicted to drugs. However, prosecutors argued that financial gain motivated the murders. In fact, following the deaths, Lyle and Erik spent nearly $700,000 on luxury items and travel.

The Break in the Case

The turning point came when Erik confessed during a therapy session with Dr. Jerome Oziel. His admission eventually reached law enforcement through Oziel’s mistress, Judalon Smyth. As a result, both brothers were arrested and charged with the murders.

Trial, Sentencing, and Where They Are Now

The trial, which began in 1993, drew national attention. In 1996, both Lyle and Erik received life sentences without the possibility of parole. They currently serve their terms at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego County, California — and were reunited there in 2018.

Remembering José and Kitty Menendez

The couple is buried at Princeton Cemetery in New Jersey. While their lives were tragically cut short, their story continues to raise questions about abuse, justice, and the complexity of family relationships.
