Olivia Culpo recently shared details about a frightening pregnancy complication she experienced in the early weeks of her journey to motherhood. In a candid TikTok post on March 18, the 32-year-old model described how she was left “bleeding everywhere” due to a blood clot in her uterus.
Culpo, who is expecting her first child with NFL star Christian McCaffrey, revealed that her health scare began after she contracted pneumonia, forcing her into weeks of strict bed rest. “I’ve been truly on bedrest for, like, four weeks,” she shared. “Towards the end of the two weeks of being really sick, I got a subchorionic hematoma, which is basically a blood clot in my uterus.”
What Is a Subchorionic Hematoma?
A subchorionic hematoma occurs when blood collects between the uterine wall and the chorion, the membrane surrounding a developing baby. It can lead to vaginal bleeding and is a common cause of spotting during pregnancy.
Despite the concerning symptoms, Culpo found reassurance when she heard her baby’s heartbeat at a doctor’s visit. “[The doctor] said you can’t go anywhere, you can’t travel … just truly, stay in bed,” she explained. Doctors prescribed progesterone suppositories to help stabilize the pregnancy and support placental attachment.
Pregnancy Announcement and Future Plans
Culpo announced her pregnancy on Instagram on March 10, sharing a maternity shoot where she cradled her growing bump. The couple, who tied the knot in June 2024 after dating for four years, had been open about their plans to start a family.
In an October 2023 TikTok video, Culpo humorously revealed that she planned to remove her IUD immediately after walking down the aisle. Now, despite the initial complications, she remains optimistic about her pregnancy journey. “I’m really grateful that everything’s going well so far,” she said. “I just hope that this can help anybody else going through this.”
