Katie Thurston’s Breast Cancer Journey: From Discovery to Treatment

Katie Thurston was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2025 at the age of 34.“I found a small lump in my breast at the 10 o’clock spot,” the former Bachelorette shared on her Instagram Stories that month. “At first, I thought it was due to my period or muscle soreness from working out. But the lump never went away.”

Thurston visited her doctor for a mammogram, which revealed cancerous tissue. A biopsy confirmed the diagnosis.

“Good news! My cancer hasn’t spread,” Thurston announced via her Instagram Stories on February 21, 2025. She explained that the malignant tissue was confined to her lymph nodes. “I have two more appointments in LA before moving to NYC on March 1st. My expected treatment plan includes fertility (egg/embryo freezing), chemo, and then surgery.”

Before starting treatment, Thurston moved to New York City with her now-husband, Jeff Arcuri. The couple got engaged in late 2024 and married in March 2025.

“I’m incredibly grateful to my family, friends, and community for their support,” she said. “Today, I feel calm, less scared, and ready.”

Katie Thurston’s Breast Cancer Timeline

November 2024

Thurston discovered a lump in her breast in late 2024. In February 2025, she shared that the pain had persisted for three to four months.

“My first lump, a benign cyst, felt like a hard pea or marble but wasn’t painful. The second one was larger,” she recalled. “At first, the pain would come and go. But after 3-4 months without improvement, I got nervous and saw my doctor.”

February 2025

Thurston was diagnosed just before Valentine’s Day and shared the news publicly soon after.

“Yesterday, I saw all the Valentine’s Day posts and felt envious,” she wrote on Instagram on February 15. “Jeff took me to Hawaii, and we had planned to travel the world before settling in NYC. Instead, I spent my day arranging housing in LA for additional tests and treatment.”

She continued, “I spent the morning sorting out insurance for NYC and researching laws on preexisting conditions. I scheduled appointments for another biopsy, fertility, mental health, surgery, and met with my team to finalize the treatment plan, which includes chemo.”
