Jennifer Gates, daughter of Bill Gates, has shared her gratitude for her father’s influence on her career choice, as she celebrates the release of his debut memoir, Source Code. The memoir, which hit shelves on February 4, 2025, delves into Bill Gates’ childhood and early adulthood, and is the first book in a planned trilogy.
A Legacy of Inspiration
Jennifer, who graduated from medical school last year and is currently doing her residency in the Pediatrics Research pathway at Mt. Sinai, took to Instagram to express her pride and appreciation for her father. In her post, she revealed how Bill Gates’ belief in the power of scientific advancements, such as AI ultrasound and malaria vaccines, inspired her to pursue a career in medicine.
“A big part of why I’m a doctor is because my dad has always instilled this belief in me that scientific advancements are going to make the world a better place,” Jennifer wrote. “I’m grateful to Dad for his optimism and loved reading his book Source Code on where it all began.”
Family Support and Praise

Jennifer’s younger sister Phoebe, who is currently working on launching her online fashion platform Phia, also shared her pride in her father. Phoebe posted a series of family photos along with a message of support, writing, “Proud of this guy today,” and included a link to Bill Gates’ newly-published memoir.
A Thoughtful Process Behind the Memoir
In an interview with People, Bill Gates shared that the idea for his memoir first emerged five years ago. Initially, he envisioned a single book, but after writing the first draft, he realized the material was too expansive for one book and decided to split his story into a trilogy. Gates mentioned his worries about taking time away from his philanthropic work, particularly his efforts with global health issues, but expressed hope that his memoir would provide valuable insights for readers.

Bill Gates’ three children—Jennifer, Phoebe, and Rory—are all acknowledged in the memoir, with Gates expressing how proud he is of the people they have become.
