Actress Jeannie Russell, who played Margaret Wade alongside Jay in the original Dennis the Menace series, called him her “otherworldly brother.” In her tribute to The Hollywood Reporter, she reflected on their bond and his enduring spirit.

Later in life, Jay stepped away from the spotlight. Instead, he focused on helping others. He became an advocate for child actors, drawing from his own experiences. He worked with A Minor Consideration, a nonprofit that supports young performers.

Jay is survived by his wife, Cindy Hackney. He left behind a legacy of warmth, humor, and resilience. His impact on television and child advocacy will always be remembered.
