James Van Der Beek, the actor who captured the hearts of a generation as the introspective dreamer Dawson Leery, has died. He was 48.
The star of the hit teen drama Dawson’s Creek passed away on Wednesday following a battle with colorectal cancer. His wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, confirmed the news in an emotional statement.
A Battle with Courage and Grace

In early November 2024, Van Der Beek publicly announced that he had been diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer. Despite the diagnosis, he remained open about his journey, frequently using social media to express gratitude for his family’s support.+1
“He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace,” Kimberly said on Instagram. “There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time.”
The Role That Defined a Generation

Born in Cheshire, Connecticut, Van Der Beek’s career skyrocketed in 1998 with the premiere of Dawson’s Creek.
As the title character, Dawson Leery, he became the face of the WB network’s golden era of teen dramas. Starring alongside Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, and Joshua Jackson, the show ran for six seasons and cemented his status as a 90s heartthrob.
While he often joked about the “trauma” of teenage fame in later years, he acknowledged the show’s massive impact, noting on its 20th anniversary that it “changed our lives and launched our careers.”
Beyond the Creek
Van Der Beek refused to be typecast by his breakout role.
- Film Success: In 1999, he led the box-office hit Varsity Blues as a high school quarterback, famously declaring, “I don’t want your life!”
- Comedic Turn: He earned critical praise for playing a hilarious, fictionalized version of himself in the cult sitcom Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23.
- Recent Work: In recent years, he starred in CSI: Cyber and appeared in Ryan Murphy’s acclaimed drama Pose.
A Family Man
Above all his roles, Van Der Beek was a dedicated father and husband. He is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children.+1
The family has asked for privacy as they grieve their “loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
