Mumbai police have arrested a man suspected of attacking Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan with a knife last week. The shocking incident took place at Khan’s home, leaving the country in shock. Fortunately, the actor is recovering after undergoing surgery.

On Sunday, police confirmed the arrest of the main suspect, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, who they claim is a Bangladeshi citizen residing in India illegally. However, Shehzad’s lawyer has denied the accusations, stating that there is no proof of his client being from Bangladesh.

Suspect Arrested in Thane

Authorities arrested Shehzad in Thane, a district near Mumbai. According to Deputy Commissioner of Mumbai Police, Dixit Gedam, preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect had been in Mumbai for about six months. He allegedly worked at a housekeeping agency under a fake name and ID.

Police suspect that Shehzad broke into Saif Ali Khan’s home intending to rob him. The Mumbai court has placed him in five-day police custody for further investigation.

Lawyer Claims Innocence

Shehzad’s lawyer, Sandeep Shikhane, argues that his client is being made a scapegoat.” He insists that there is no documentary evidence proving Shehzad’s Bangladeshi citizenship.

Attack Raises Security Concerns in Mumbai

The stabbing of Saif Ali Khan has raised concerns about safety and security in Mumbai, one of India’s most populous cities and its financial hub.

Khan was stabbed six times, suffering multiple injuries, including one on the back of his neck.

Eyewitness Account of the Attack

A nurse, Eliyama Philip, who works in Khan’s home, told the police she noticed a shadow near the bathroom door late at night. She was in the child’s room with the nanny when a masked intruder appeared holding a wooden object and a long blade.

The intruder threatened them, demanding ₹10 million ($115,477; £94,511). A scuffle broke out, injuring Philip. Hearing the noise, Saif Ali Khan and his wife rushed to the room, and the attacker stabbed the actor before fleeing.

CCTV Footage and Investigation

On Friday, police detained and later released five other individuals for questioning, as they resembled the attacker seen in CCTV footage exiting the building. The investigation is still ongoing.

This high-profile attack has left fans and the film industry deeply concerned. Authorities continue to work on strengthening security measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
