Turning 70 is a major milestone, but America’s Got Talent judge Howie Mandel is not here for the age-adjusted compliments. What started as a standard morning talk show interview on Live with Kelly and Mark quickly turned into a tense, albeit entertaining, live TV moment.
Here is a breakdown of the awkward exchange and the bizarre workout routine Mandel credits for his youthful appearance.
The Awkward Exchange

The tension sparked on Monday’s broadcast when co-host Mark Consuelos brought up Mandel’s recent 70th birthday. Consuelos praised the comedian, setting the stage for Kelly Ripa to add, “It doesn’t make any sense.”
Mandel immediately went on the defensive, questioning what she meant. When Consuelos tried to smooth things over by simply stating, “You look great!”, Mandel was not having it.
“I look great? That doesn’t mean anything to me. No, no, no, no. I don’t like that, because that’s a caveat,” Mandel fired back.
“Smart for a Stupid Person”
Ripa attempted some quick damage control, insisting that they were not saying he looked great for 70, but rather that he just looked great in general. Mandel, however, doubled down, pointing out that they couldn’t seem to untangle the compliment from his age.
To drive his point home, the comedian reframed their praise into a sharp comparison: “It’s like saying you’re smart for a stupid person.”
Consuelos leaned into the awkwardness, replying with a simple “Yeah,” which drew a wave of laughter from the studio audience. Mandel eventually broke the tension with a quick quip: “I’ll be serious for a minute. I’m gorgeous!”
Howie’s Bizarre Fitness Routine
So, how exactly is the TV personality staying in such great shape? Mandel revealed that actor Jerry O’Connell recently introduced him to a highly unconventional swimming workout.
Instead of swimming traditional laps, Mandel uses resistance cables tied to his ankles and attached to the side of the pool. To add even more resistance, he uses “frying pan paddles” on his hands.
“I swim for an hour and go nowhere,” Mandel joked, noting that he gets completely lost in the intense, stationary routine.
