It looks like Anne Hathaway is coming back to Genovia!
It’s been 20 years since The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement was in theaters, and fans have been eager for more of Queen Mia. Now, it seems like they’ll get their wish!
On October 4, Hathaway confirmed that a third movie is in the works.
In a video, Hathaway is seen sitting in a chair, holding up one finger and saying, “One.” Then, her character Mia from the first movie says the famous line, “A princess? Shut up!” This is followed by Julie Andrews’ character, Queen Clarisse, also saying “shut up” in the second movie. Finally, Hathaway holds up three fingers, smiling, and says, “Shut up!”
“Miracles happen ✨👑 Back to Genovia with @Disney Studios & @Somewhere Pictures. The fairy tale continues,” she captioned her TikTok.
Right now, we don’t know much about the plot or if Julie Andrews will be involved, according to Deadline. However, Adele Lim, the director of Joy Ride, confirmed on Instagram that she’ll be directing the new movie.
What is the ‘Princess Diaries’ franchise about?
The story follows Mia Thermopolis, a girl from San Francisco played by Anne Hathaway, who finds out she’s actually the princess of a small country called Genovia. Julie Andrews plays her grandmother, who helps Mia learn how to be part of the royal family.
In the second movie, Mia adjusts to royal life and is expected to get married in order to become queen.
What has been said before about a ‘Princess Diaries 3’?
In an interview with TODAY.com, Julie Andrews (who played Queen Clarisse Rinaldi in The Princess Diaries) was asked if there was any news about a third movie.
“I’ve been asked that a lot,” Andrews said in April 2024 while discussing a new picture book she wrote with her daughter, Emma Watson Hamilton.
She mentioned that there were talks about a third film but nothing ever came of it. “I think it’s been shelved, but I could be wrong,” she said.
At the time, Andrews didn’t believe the franchise would continue, but she did add, “I’m sure there will be another version someday.” She also reflected on the idea of another movie, saying it’s been a long time since the last one and sometimes it’s better to leave things as they are rather than dragging them out too long. Still, she said she’d be happy to do another one, though she didn’t expect it to happen.
Back in 2019, Anne Hathaway revealed on Watch What Happens Live that there was a script for a third movie. She said she, Andrews, and the producer Debra Martin Chase all wanted it to happen.
However, in 2022, Andrews told The Hollywood Reporter that it was probably “too late” for a third film, especially after the director, Garry Marshall, passed away in 2016.
