Prolific stage and screen star Michael Byrne has died. The actor, known for playing the villainous Colonel Vogel in 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, was 82 years old.
The Guardian was first to report the news. Per the outlet, he died on June 20 and is survived by actress Carole Nimmons, his wife since 1965, and their two daughters and three grandchildren. A cause of death has yet to be announced.

Born in London in 1943 to a single mother, Byrne attended the Anna Freud nursery and Burgess Hill school in Hampstead, England, training as an actor at the Central School of Speech and Drama.
Byrne began appearing in guest TV roles in the 1960s. He also began working steadily onstage, starting with the touring Arena theater company (where he met his eventual wife) and Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre Company at London’s Old Vic Theatre.

Making the jump to the big screen in the 1970s, Byrne found a niche in WWII movies: 1976’s The Eagle Has Landed, 1977’s A Bridge Too Far and 1978’s Force 10 from Navarone.

He then stole scenes in 1985’s The Good Father opposite Anthony Hopkins; Last Crusade opposite Harrison Ford and Sean Connery; 1995’s Braveheart, again in a villainous role, opposite Mel Gibson; and 2002’s Gangs of New York opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.
In 1997’s Tomorrow Never Dies, Byrne played Admiral Kelly opposite Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond.
His most recent big screen blockbuster role was as Gellert Grindelwald in 2010’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, and he made memorable turns on ITV soap opera Coronation Street between 2008 and 2010 and in 2013 miniseries Lightfields.
Byrne also remained a regular presence on stages around England, most recently earning his third credit on the West End in the 2018 play Mary Stuart.
