Marcus Smart, now a guard for the Washington Wizards, had a tense moment with a fan during his return to TD Garden on Sunday, April 6.
“The fan just crossed the line, and we all know I don’t do line-crossing,” Smart told reporters, as quoted by CBS Sports. “It’s unfortunate. I gave everything to this city. But it is what it is. We move on.”
Smart played for the Celtics for nine seasons after being drafted in 2014. He won Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 and helped lead the team to the NBA Finals that same year, where they lost to the Golden State Warriors.

In 2023, he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies, then to the Wizards in 2025.
Though Smart didn’t get any playing time on Sunday due to injuries, Celtics fans showed support. The crowd cheered and chanted, “We want Marcus!”
He has struggled with injuries in recent seasons and has appeared in only 54 games across his time with Memphis and Washington.
Despite not playing, Smart’s presence in Boston clearly still means a lot — to the fans, and to him.
