Michelle Williams is standing by her Dawson’s Creek co-star James Van Der Beek as he navigates his battle with cancer.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight on Wednesday, April 2, Williams, 44, confirmed she’s been in regular contact with Van Der Beek, who announced his stage 3 colorectal cancer diagnosis in 2024.
“We’re in contact, and he’s in our hearts and our minds, and he knows that,” she said. “We’re here for him in every and all ways.”
Although she didn’t specify who “we” referred to, it likely includes fellow Dawson’s Creek castmates such as Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson, who starred with her in the iconic teen drama from 1998 to 2003.
Family Over Fame
In a separate appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen on Thursday, April 3, Williams shared that her 19-year-old daughter Matilda — whom she shared with the late actor Heath Ledger — hasn’t watched her in Dawson’s Creek.
“I don’t think so,” Williams said with a smile. “No, she’s been really busy watching all seven seasons of New Girl for the eighth time.”
Van Der Beek’s Health Journey
Van Der Beek, 48, went public with his cancer diagnosis in a November 2024 People interview, stating:
“I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family. There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.”

“This year, I had to look my own mortality in the eye. I came nose to nose with death.”
Van Der Beek has been married to Kimberley Van Der Beek since 2010. The couple shares six children: Olivia (14), Joshua (13), Annabel (11), Emilia (8), Gwendolyn (6), and Jeremiah (2).
“All of those definitions that I cared so deeply about were stripped from me,” he said. “I could no longer be a husband who was helpful to my wife or a father who could pick up his kids and put them to bed.”
As Van Der Beek continues his recovery, the love and support from his co-stars and family remain a pillar of strength during this difficult chapter.
