Baylee Littrell Honors Late Grandma as He Advances on American Idol Journey

Baylee Littrell’s emotional journey on American Idol continues, and while he’s surrounded by the support of his family, there’s one person he wishes could be there to see him shine.

Baylee’s Emotional Journey on American Idol

During the Hollywood round on American Idol season 23, Baylee performed his original song, “Hey Jesus.” His parents, Backstreet Boys singer Brian Littrell and Leighanne Wallace, watched proudly from the audience.

Growing up in a musical family gave Baylee opportunities, but it also created challenges. “It opens a lot of doors,” he admitted. “But it also creates animosity. I’m here to make this on my own and carve my path.”

A Heartfelt Tribute to His Late Grandmother

As he introduced the inspiration behind his song, Baylee explained that it was written during a tough time in his life. “My grandma was my best friend. With my dad being away on tour, she would always step in. She understood me like not many people do,” he said, breaking down in tears. Baylee shared that his grandmother passed away nearly three years ago, and he had expected her to be there for milestones like this. The loss led him to question his faith, but writing the song helped him rediscover it.

Supportive Family and Emotional Performance

Baylee performed “Hey Jesus” while strumming an acoustic guitar, with his fellow contestants showing their appreciation. As the camera panned to his father, Brian, he was seen singing along with pride.

The judges were moved by his heartfelt performance. Carrie Underwood praised Baylee for his “heart” and “genuineness,” while Lionel Richie applauded the “great lyrics” of his song.

“If my grandma saw me, she’d probably be really proud,” Baylee reflected after his performance. “I hope it’s enough to get to the next round.”

Baylee’s Survival and Lola’s Heartbreak

As the episode progressed, the judges deliberated over which contestants to advance to the next stage, with host Ryan Seacrest describing the moment as “the biggest cut in Idol history.” Baylee survived the elimination, but another contestant, Lola Bonfiglio did not make it through, despite a strong performance of Billie Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather.”

Carnie Wilson supported her daughter through the disappointment, telling her, “You took a chance and you gave it your all. That means you’re a winner.”
