Gene Hackman and Wife Betsy Arakawa Found Dead: Investigation and Causes Revealed

Hollywood is mourning the loss of legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa. Authorities found the couple deceased at their New Mexico home on February 26, 2025. Their dog was also discovered dead. The circumstances surrounding their deaths raised many questions, leading to an official investigation.

Discovery and Investigation

Police discovered Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 65, at their residence in Santa Fe Summit. Initially, authorities saw no signs of foul play, but later findings raised concerns. A search warrant obtained by TMZ revealed unusual details, including an unlocked front door, scattered prescription pills, and a moved heater.

Investigators found Arakawa’s body in an advanced state of decomposition, with signs of mummification in her hands and feet. Hackman was in a separate room, fully clothed, with sunglasses lying next to him. These details suggested he had fallen before passing away.

Early speculation pointed to carbon monoxide poisoning. However, a search warrant confirmed that no gas leaks were detected in their home.

Gene Hackman’s Career and Legacy

Gene Hackman was a two-time Academy Award winner known for films like The French Connection, Unforgiven, Superman, and Mississippi Burning. After retiring from acting in 2004, he pursued writing, publishing novels such as Pursuit and Escape from Andersonville.

His influence on Hollywood remains significant. The Hollywood Reporter described him as one of the greatest actors of his generation. His powerful performances continue to inspire actors and filmmakers worldwide.

Confirmed Causes of Death

Authorities later confirmed the causes of death. Arakawa died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a severe respiratory illness caused by exposure to rodent droppings, urine, or saliva. Surveillance footage showed her alive on February 12, contradicting earlier reports that she passed on February 11.

Hackman’s cause of death was hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), a condition that hardens the arteries. Alzheimer’s disease was listed as a contributing factor. His pacemaker stopped recording activity on February 18, suggesting he died on that day.

The couple’s dog likely died from dehydration and starvation. TMZ reported that another dog was found alive near Arakawa’s body, adding to the mystery of the case.

Hollywood Pays Tribute

The entertainment industry continues to honor Hackman’s legacy. His work shaped modern cinema, and his performances remain unforgettable. E! News reported that fans and fellow actors have expressed their condolences, reflecting on his extraordinary career.
