Loretta Devine has shared her thoughts on working with Jennifer Love Hewitt on the short-lived series The Client List.
In an interview with People published on Tuesday, February 18, Devine, 75, revealed that her experience with Hewitt, 45, was “mixed.” She expressed concerns about Hewitt’s creative decisions, as she not only starred in the show but also served as an executive producer.
“You know what? She decided to rewrite the entire angle of the show right in the middle,” Devine told the outlet.
The Client List, which premiered in 2021, followed Riley Parks (played by Hewitt), a mother abandoned by her husband who takes a job at a day spa that secretly offers X-rated services, run by Georgia Cummings (played by Devine). The show was canceled in 2013 after two seasons, with reports suggesting that the network couldn’t agree on a direction for a third season, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The series also starred Cybill Shepherd, Rebecca Field, and Colin Egglesfield.
On-Set Tensions and Past Controversies

This isn’t the first time Hewitt has been at the center of rumored behind-the-scenes drama. On the I Know What You Did Last Summer set in the ‘90s, she was reportedly at odds with Sarah Michelle Gellar.
At the time, speculation arose that Hewitt influenced the decision to kill off Gellar’s character, Helen Shivers. However, Hewitt denied the claims during a December 2024 episode of the I’ve Never Said This Before With Tommy DiDario podcast.
“I was 18. They were not taking script notes from me. All of us were in that experience together, you know, figuring it all out. And I root for her and Freddie [Prinze Jr.],” Hewitt said, addressing the rumors.
While Gellar won’t be part of the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot in July 2025, Hewitt and Prinze Jr. will return alongside new cast members, including Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, and more.
Loretta Devine’s Accomplished Career
Before The Client List, Devine had already built an impressive career. She starred alongside Whitney Houston in Waiting to Exhale and played Lorrell Robinson in the original Broadway production of Dreamgirls.
She also gained widespread recognition for her recurring role as Adele Webber on Grey’s Anatomy, earning an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series in 2011.
